Trekking for Doctors Without Borders

By CASIE AND JESS Join Me

Help us to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières!

We are trekking around 1500km's of New Zealand's Te Araroa Trail from January to April, to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

MSF is providing vital medical assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters and exclusion from health care. This year has been a difficult one with war, violence, natural disasters and increased displacement contributing to a greater demand for essential healthcare worldwide wide.

From providing surgical care for people affected by violence in Gaza and Ukraine to responding to the emergency needs of people displaced in Sudan, MSF is doing some incredible work which we would like to support. Your donations allow MSF to respond immediately when emergencies strike, with funds prioritised where the need is greatest.

Please help us to support MSF's mission by donating to our fundraiser. Every donation is greatly appreciated, just a small amount can make a big difference.

Thanks for your support,
Casie and Jess

DAY 16-21: THE WAIAU PASS TRACK

Thursday 27th Mar
After getting absolutely annihilated by the Richmond Ranges, starting the Waiau Pass track was like an apology for our suffering. It felt like a fairytale meandering on the flat and kind terrain alongside Lake Rotoiti and the Travers River Valley as the sun beamed down on us.

The following day we steadily ascended through fields of tussock, up the Travers Saddle track where the terrain became increasingly rough and rocky and remained so on the steep descent through the forest. Clouds encroached over us adding to the dramatic and remarkable views of the alpine mountains encapsulating us.

The next morning we had beautiful blue skies as we walked by the rapid rivers through the idyllic mountain range. We had a pristine view of the sacred Blue Lake, before the skies began to gloom grey again as we continued on the rocky trail alongside Lake Constance to the base of the Waiau Pass.

From here we began an arduous climb up a steep scree slope over the Waiau Pass. We saw incredible panoramic views of the glacial landscapes at the peak before a sketchy but exciting climb down towards the Waiau Forks where we pitched our tent before the ominous clouds finally released their wrath.

Due to the forecasted thunderstorm we took a half day the next day and resided at Waiau Hut, but we weren’t the only ones with this idea. By the evening 11 people had sought refuge in the 6-bed hut, one of whom arrived late in the night after crossing the Waiau Pass in the dark during a thunderstorm. (and you think we’re crazy?)

The rest of this section was utterly peaceful, walking through the valley flats for another 2 days in much more favourable weather conditions. We completed our leg in Boyle Village alongside our SOBO pals we picked up on the way. From here we hitched off trail to Hanmer Springs, a quaint town earning the title of ‘The Vortex’ by TA hikers, who infamously get trapped in the hot pool haven. Rumour has it that hikers who have dipped their toes in the lazy river here, have never made it back on trail.

DAY 6-15: THE RICHMOND ALPINE TRACK

Thursday 27th Mar

On day 6, we left Havelock with intense blisters, heavy bags and a naievity only possible when you’re 4 days into your first hike… Unaware of what would come of the next 10 days, we trundled on.

Jess turned 23 on the Pelorus River track, where we swam in emerald pools (which were MAGICAL), got seriously sweaty walking up and down the river embankment track, were violently attacked by sandflies, and spent our first night in a hut.

From Hacket Hut we nervously made our way into the Ranges. Our last chance to back out before we would commit to a week of testing terrain, both of us too stubborn to admit just how terrified we were. Focused on the incredibly steep ascent we had in front of us we were taken aback by amount of times we would have to cross the river just to get there. Exhausted after a long day walking/climbing/crying in the river we were rewarded with a beautiful beautiful sunset. The sky a blend of pastel pink & purple hues, the night crept over us and we spent a cozy night in Slaty Hut.

We had another tough day summiting little Rintoul, just to scramble down our first scree slope to then summit the real deal: Mt Rintoul. With gorgeous weather we were treated to panoramic views all day.

Jess was brought undone by THE boulder (if you know you know!) and had to side quest down an unstable cliff face to retrieve her pole. We ventured along goat tracks and boulder fields for the last few days, physically and mentally strained by the tough week we’ve endured.

Just as we felt our motivation dwindling, an encounter with a NOBO took us surprise. “Are you Casie and Jess?”, the complete stranger asks us. Looking at each other confused and stunned, we confirmed, in suspense of where this conversation was leading. “Some people have left a note and some gifts for you at the next hut”. The mystical trail magic that everyone talks about had come our way, giving us a second lease of life to finish our leg right through to St Arnaud.

On arrival, we realised that the three-in-one gas station, general store and café was the epicentre of the civilisation we had been fantasising about all week. Reality smacked us in the face. Oh boy… we have a long 2 months ahead.

DAY 1-5: THE QUEEN CHARLOTTE TRACK

Thursday 27th Mar

We started the TA on the 31st January at Ship Cove on the Queen Charlotte Track. On this first leg, we walked 90km with an elevation gain of 2991m and a descent of 2994m across 4 days, followed by a rest and resupply day in Havelock.

During this stunning section, we spotted some super rare marine wildlife including Hector’s dolphins & King Shags, followed beautiful blue coastlines and witnessed a magical sunset over Marlborough Sounds- a perfect way to ease us into the next few months of hiking!
