Alice's Twenty First

Please help me raise vital funds for Médecins Sans Frontières

Médecins Sans Frontières provides assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters and to victims of armed conflict. They do so irrespective of gender, race, religion, creed or political convictions.

A story I keep thinking about is from South Sudan, where a man named Noon Makor Arop was bitten by a snake. In many rural areas, that can be a death sentence. People often have to walk for hours or even days to reach care, and many don’t make it in time. He survived after receiving treatment from MSF, and now works with them as a health promoter, going out into communities to teach people what to do when a snakebite happens and how to get help quickly.

I’m very aware that turning 21, celebrating with friends, and generally getting to plan something like this is, in itself, a kind of good fortune. For most of us, access to healthcare is something we’ve simply always had rather than something we’ve had to earn, travel for, or risk our lives to reach. This is, in a way, about rebalancing that a little. If you were thinking of giving something to me, I’d much rather it go towards someone else getting something far more important. MSF are currently working in major crises including Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine as well as in places that receive far less attention but face equally severe gaps in healthcare.

Please consider giving.
